Many finance leaders have had limited Board level exposure and struggle to determine the best approach towards interacting more with the Board.
During this video extract from a GrowCFO workshop, professional mentor and experienced CFO Paul McKoen and GrowCFO’s Founder Dan Wells discuss the benefits of volunteering for Board level roles within other institutions to gain more experience and further develop your board level skills:
Many finance leaders are volunteering for Board level roles within charities and other not-for profit institutions
Board seats help CFOs to think in different ways about governance, reporting and other business issues.
They increase your confidence towards dealing with other board members and make you feel comfortable with expressing your views inside a Board room environment.
These roles also provide you with the perspective of somebody who is only involved within the business on a part-time basis. This helps to increase your awareness of how to interact effectively with NEDs, Chairs, Board advisors and Observers, plus to consider what type of information would benefit them.
Board roles can be very helpful to give you new ideas about your level of interaction with board members both inside and outside of the Board room, plus they provide you with a network of experienced friendly people.
Assess your skills
How much exposure do you typically have with Boards?
Would you benefit from a voluntary Board role within another institution?
Which type of roles would benefit you the most?
