Module 7: Represent your business externally

Dan Wells October 10, 2023

The CFO is a vital member of a company’s leadership team and this inevitably brings increased exposure to the outside world. You play a key role in representing your business externally, for example with investors, bankers, customers, suppliers and regulators. It is important to manage external stakeholders effectively to maintain positive relationships, support the success of your business and keep everybody updated on the progress of your company.

There are many different types of external stakeholders, each with their own interests and agendas. It is essential to identify and understand these different groups to engage with them effectively. Your interaction, communication and ability to work together will affect their perception of your company and their ongoing willingness to support your success.

During this module, we discuss the importance of representing your business externally and provide examples of the common external relationships for most finance leaders. We share insights regarding how to engage with these individuals, keep them informed and gain maximum leverage from each of these powerful relationships. This helps you to build trusted relationships with each external party and generate their confidence in your leadership team’s ability to deliver your business plan.
